Microsoft SharePoint; the enabler of integration

“Communication” and “Synergy” are two words that get thrown into discussions around building successful teams; but what about in technology. In building technology platforms we refer to “integration”, but to ensure success in building a successful platform we need to start with focusing on the same keywords. In the same way we want people to clearly communicate to each other and work in harmony, we want to avoid (at all costs) our systems feeding each other the wrong data and needing constant interjection to keep them working together. Unfortunately “bolted” together systems are commonplace, and most organizations can pinpoint multiple places where systems don’t communicate (either at all or badly) or require manual intervention to have them work together (through manual intervention or otherwise) to create synergy.
Microsoft SharePoint provides not just a great set of features, but it also provides a framework on which the Microsoft applications and platforms are able to easily integrate with. Microsoft SharePoint integration is of course often “out of the box”, but as an added benefit, integration can easily be extended by way of the Microsoft .NET framework. In the past integration work required learning the communication “language” of the source and destination systems however by way of .Net framework and XML systems integration is by a common language and the task is more about how successfully the integration is implemented as opposed to whether it can be done. Microsoft .Net qualified staff are increasingly readily available and can be handpicked for their skills in understanding the business problem.
In considering your next major piece of software, consider not just what it does in isolation, but also what it could be when talking to other systems. SharePoint offers the perfect platform from which you can start to build your systems to work the way your business works (not the other way round). SharePoint builds confidence that future integration decisions are less around “Is it possible ?” to being more around time, budget and the validity of the idea.

SQL Server “Denali” is almost here – What’s your next Microsoft SQL Server move going to be?

This week saw the release of CTP3 of SQL Server Denali. Denali is the code name for the next release of SQL Server on the back of the highly successful SQL Server 2008 R2.

CTP’s (Community Technology Previews) are Microsoft’s way of keeping the communities and in particular their partner organisation abreast of what the final product will look like. This will likely be Microsoft’s last CTP given that “Denali” is rumoured for a Q4 2011 release, so the SQL group at Artis is hard at work learning the new features ready for Denali to make final release.

Although being a preview and features may change, Denali offers the following new features for consideration:

  • Enhanced Disaster Recovery and High Availability options
  • Extensive integration with SharePoint:
    • Reports and Dashboards
    • SQL Server Administration Tasks
  • Powerful Business Intelligence delivered simply via project “Cresent”
  • Integration with SQL Azure
  • Seamless management of local and cloud based SQL Infrastructure

As Artis consultants review CTP3 in the coming weeks, we will release via our web site what we see will be the benefit to business. For business’ considering the move to SQL Server as their database platform, the time is right to start thinking Denali and looking to what it will offer. For business’ currently running SQL Server, now is the time to consider your next SQL Server move.

Due to its robustness, many businesses are left “comfortably” running SQL Server 2000 (and often older) deployments. While Denali offers advancement to all SQL Server business, there will be some business’ questioning the need for yet another upgrade “for the sake of it”. As a business reliant on SQL Server there are a few things that you should consider in business planning and the risks posed in not putting in planning around your database platform.

For businesses running SQL Server 2000:
The facts:

  • SQL Server 2000 entered Microsoft Extended Support mode in 2008 meaning less support options
  • SQL Server Denali, will NOT support direct SQL Server 2000 to Denali upgrades

Options and Considerations:

  • Consider contacting a reliable Microsoft Partner (such as Artis) with a proven track record in SQL Server Upgrade Management to plan your next move to ensure your database assets are protected

For businesses running SQL Server 2005:
The facts:

  • SQL Server 2005 entered Microsoft Extended Support mode in April 2005 meaning less support options
  • SQL Server 2005 deployments will be upgradeable to “Denali”

Considerations:

  • You will be able to use the Upgrade Adviser tools provided by Microsoft to help in assessing the upgrade effort, however consider contacting a reliable Microsoft Partner (such as Artis) with a proven track record in SQL Server Upgrade Management to plan your next move

For businesses running SQL Server 2008 (R2 or below):

  • SQL Server 2008 deployments will be upgradeable to “Denali”

Considerations:

  • Review “Denali” and see what benefits it may hold for your business (stay tuned to the Artis News Feed for further details)

In planning your next move, regardless of your current deployment, Artis recommends and follows Microsoft’s recommendations in placing the largest planning effort on undergoing a full testing regime. and planning process around any SQL Server Upgrade you are planning. Data management is a critical part of Enterprise Risk Management and as such needs to be dealt with at a level of diligence higher than simply “running an upgrade”. Artis has successfully managed numerous SQL Server upgrades for clients for which their business relies on their database platform. Artis intends to take this success forward with SQL Server Denali.
